DESCRIPTION:MODERN SKILLS Human Capital & Talent Utilization by Businesses\n\n\nACEO-SESMA highlight the importance of skills for businesses\n\nSoft skills are emerging as the new\, powerful currency of Human Resources\, according to the joint survey conducted by SESMA (Hellenic Association of Management Consulting Firms) and ACEO (Association of Chief Executive Officers) \nThe survey also reveals a clear trend: soft skills have become a decisive factor in hiring and promotion decisions. \nSpecifically\, 17.1% of survey participants believe that critical thinking and problem-solving are the most lacking soft skills among current candidates and employees. These are followed by resilience & adaptability (12.1%)\, commitment (10.9%)\, emotional intelligence (9.9%)\, communication (9.5%)\, and leadership (8.3%). \nDespite the growing importance of soft skills\, technical skills still play a role—though a less significant one—particularly in the technology sector. The survey highlights that knowledge of cutting-edge technologies is the most in-demand technical skill (6.7%)\, followed by strategic orientation (5.6%) and learning & knowledge utilization (4.3%). \nAnother key finding is the current shortage of personnel with the necessary skills to meet modern labor market demands. Participants expressed strong concerns about the gap between the skills available in candidates and those required for business success. To address this issue\, senior executives emphasize the need for closer collaboration between academia and the business world. Such collaboration could help reshape curricula to better align with labor market needs. \nAt a time when the lack of skilled personnel poses a significant challenge for businesses\, the goal of attracting talent—commonly referred to as “brain gain”—is at the heart of both SESMA’s and EASE’s agendas\, as highlighted by George Katiniotis\, CEO of Acromove\, and Fotis Benekos\, Vice President of the SESMA Board of Directors\, while summarizing the key findings. \nThe survey presentation was followed by a speech from Dimitris Bourantas\, former Management professor at AUEB and Rector of New York College\, titled “HR in Turbulent Times.” According to the professor\, today’s environment is shaped by numerous factors that make it difficult to select and retain the right people: change\, uncertainty\, complexity\, ambiguity\, diversity\, contradictions\, demands\, and constraints. “Expectations have grown—from society\, from competition\, and from consumers. The times are turbulent\, but we must see this challenge as an opportunity\, and focus on what and how we can manage in terms of HR\,” he remarked. \nHe went on to describe the characteristics that the right candidates should have: “The right people are self-motivated—those who are driven by passion to do their job excellently. At the same time\, if we look at the most successful organizations globally\, we see that hiring must also focus on cultural fit with the organization’s values and policies. A third key characteristic is their credentials\, which include soft skills.” \nThe event concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Professor Dimitris Bourantas and featuring the following participants: Vassilis Adamidis\, Human Resources Director\, Nestlé Greece/Cyprus/Albania; Maria Ioannidou\, CEO & Country Manager\, Hellenic Duty-Free Shops; Manos Panorios\, Managing Director\, Stanton Chase International; and George Raounas\, former SESMA Board President. \n“We are currently in a ‘war for talent\,’ which is a positive development after a decade of limited employment opportunities\,” said Manos Panorios. “The greatest challenge today is understanding the different mindset of the younger generation.” George Raounas added\, “There is also a third category of skills related to values\, which companies themselves must help instill in their people.” \n“We have graduates with excellent technical skills\, but what’s missing is a connection with the job market—something that should be part of the educational process\,” said Maria Ioannidou. Similarly\, Vassilis Adamidis emphasized that beyond technical knowledge\, companies “are looking for people who are eager to learn\, so we can invest in them.” \nIt is worth noting that ACEO and SESMA announced that this event marks the beginning of a formal collaboration between the two organizations on shared values\, initiatives\, and areas of action. \nOn behalf of ACEO\, Vassilis Rabbat\, Management Consultant of the association\, stated: “We are particularly pleased that our alignment with SESMA is evolving into a more meaningful partnership. EASE has always supported the belief that the human factor makes the difference in business. Become the Leader who inspires and persuades! \nWith great success and an exceptional response from the business community\, ACEO held its 36th Leadership Conference\, titled “The Art of Influence – Unlocking True Leadership\,” which this year focused on one of the most relevant and widely discussed concepts of our time: Influence. \nDuring the two-day conference—rich in reflection\, ideas\, and insights—and attended by more than 400 delegates\, distinguished speakers from Greece and abroad highlighted the role of influence as an essential element of effective leadership in a constantly changing world. \nThe Chairman of the ACEO Board of Directors and CEO of Growthfund\, Mr. Yiannis Papachristou\, emphasized in his opening remarks ACEO’s role as a strategic pillar in shaping a new productive model for the country. He underlined that leadership is not exercised through directives\, but through influence. \nHe stressed the importance of credibility and authentic connection between leaders and their teams\, noting that an organization’s success depends not only on its financial performance but also on the social value it creates. As he characteristically stated: “Influence is not just a timely topic; it is fundamental to Leadership. In a world that is rapidly changing\, leaders must evolve—and so must the organizations we lead. Today\, they are judged not only by their financial results but also by how they use their mission to create added value and positively influence society and its citizens.” \nInternationally renowned professor and leadership expert Benjamin Laker highlighted the profound difference between power and influence\, stressing that “influence is not power; it is inspiration.” He challenged the audience to consider whether their influence lasts even when they are not present. He noted that influence does not stem from one’s title or formal position but from the ability to inspire positive action— even from a distance. “Real influence is the one that continues to work after you have left the room\,” he remarked. \nA fascinating panel discussion followed\, focusing on meaningful influence and Greek leadership experiences. Andreas Athanasopoulos\, CEO of Olympia Group\, Antigoni Lyberopoulou\, CEO of the Hellenic Development Bank of Investments\, Nikos Koumettis\, President of Europe Operating Unit\, The Coca-Cola Company; and Aristotelis Panteliadis\, CEO of METRO S.A.\, shared strategies\, challenges\, and insights on how influence is cultivated in practice—from perseverance and thoughtful decision-making to managing radical ideas. \nJulie Masters\, influence expert and founder of Influence Nation\, emphasized the connection between influence and authentic presence\, noting that influence is built through consistency and actions—not through attempts to be liked. As she explained\, impactful leadership is the result of ongoing personal development and accountability. “We are living in a new age of influence… It’s about who knows how to capture attention\, turn it into engagement\, and then into action.” \nA special highlight was the speech delivered by Mr. Dimitris Daskalopoulos in The Statement of the Leader section\, which is dedicated to leadership experiences and lessons shared by distinguished figures. Mr. Mr. Dimitris Daskalopoulos\, founder of NEON and Chairman and founder of diaNEOsis\, spoke about the lessons he learned throughout his career and discussed the relationship between Influence and Ethics\, emphasizing: “Leadership is\, above all\, a moral stance toward life — confidence amid uncertainty and determination amid ambiguity.” He described the Leader as “an inspirer of capable people\, who brings together vision\, mission\, and team.” \nFocus\, concentration\, mindfulness: What threatens them? How do we strengthen them? \nThe second day of the conference focused on concentration\, attention\, and mindfulness.Distinguished cardiac surgeon Dr. Theodoros Kofidis\, Director of the International Cardiac Surgery Center of Greece/HYGEIA and Director of the 1st Cardiac Surgery Clinic\, highlighted the culture of trust and shared purpose as the foundation of leadership in the medical field: “Leadership is not about hierarchy; it is about culture\, trust\, and common purpose.” \nClinical Psychologist – Child Psychologist Ms. Xenia Stefanopoulou underscored that “Concentration is a skill cultivated through awareness\, intention\, and supportive environments… Mindfulness is not a luxury—it is an essential tool for a meaningful life and work.” \nMr. Giorgos Geroulis\, retired Air Force Lieutenant General\, shared life lessons from his career in fighter jet cockpits: “In high-intensity situations\, proper role allocation\, composure\, and communication save lives. Success is collective—and focus must be absolute.” \nMindset and Development Consultant\, Mindfulness & Meditation Instructor\, and Author Mr. Konstantinos Charantiniotis offered valuable advice on relaxation and mindfulness techniques.
